Hurdle #1

Wed Apr 22, 2009, 8:32 AM
I decided that, since last week was the week from hell, I would look at each obstacle as a hurdle, to be attempted one at a time. And as soon as I get over that hurdle, I can forget about it and move onto the next one. That's the only way I've been able to live my life when I've had a thousand things going on at once. Just take it one at a time.

So my first hurdle involves my house. My uncle put it up for sale the night before last. I knew he was planning on putting it up, but I had no idea when. Until I saw the sign in my yard when I came home late from work a couple nights ago. To be perfectly clear, the house doesn't actually belong to me, but I've been paying rent and the utility bills for the past 5 years to my mom. When we discussed putting it up for sale, the question came up whether I'd like to buy it outright. I clearly stated that I didn't have the $345,000 to buy it. So it's being sold.

I got a call last night from my uncle, saying he'd gotten a dozen calls on the house and one lady wanted to come out and see it that night(?!) I hadn't done any cleaning whatsoever; there were spots on the mirror, clothes draped over the bathtub, soap scum on the shower doors... I needed at least a full day to clean that place. I knew I needed to do it eventually, but I told him before that I needed to know a date because it's impossible for me to keep it spotless forever. That's the reality.

Long story short, I spent all last night cleaning it (with the help of my mom) and it's likely that it'll be sold within a week. That's my prediction. What happens after that? I move onto the couch in my parent's basement until I find a new house. Which could take several years. Especially since I have no idea how to go about buying a home...

Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude. Alexis de Tocqueville
